I recently meet the Dean of The Imani School Ms. Pat Williams while photographing a pop-up dinner party I attended by Aces of Taste. She asked what type of photography I did and I explained that I work for magazines and specialize in fashion photography, among other things. Ms. William's lit up, and presented me with a card, and an opportunity I couldn't pass up.
I don't shoot children often, so when given the chance I decided to do something a bit different, fun and quirky. After much thought I figured light painting was the best option. The results were exactly as intended although cooler lights could have been found.
Being my first time shooting children I decided to buck the trend of having them sitting in a library backdrop with lame props and what not. So I decided to add a little black smith style to the shoot.
The kids were dressed great, and were already used to taking photos with iPhones and selfies. Many were confident and hardly had to be posed at all. I treated them like baby models and had them pose and feel cool.
